A Brief Thought on Life Transitions and Operating from a Position of “Fuck You”
This will be brief, but I wanted to share some perspective on life transitions and how to make sure that you always operate from a position of “fuck you” (aka leverage on your side) when it comes to employment. I find that when I talk with transitioning military they all view life stages as binary (i.e. once I leave the military then my new life will begin and I will move somewhere and get a house and start my new career and that will be it).
Well I am here to tell you that the only thing that is permanent in life is change, especially when it comes to careers. I don’t have the exact number, but a very high percentage of veterans leave their first jobs when they transition. Even once you have found a job you like things are going to change, your manager will change, a re-org will happen in your organization that moves you to a different part of the company, the company will be bought or buy another company, a lay off will hit you etc. You should always expect change to come your way, how you react to it and how well prepared are the variables you control. You should never expect that the status quo will continue for very long. Always have a plan A, B and C for your finances, personal life and the impacts on your family. Don’t over leverage yourself in your finances, manage expectations with your family live below your means so you can react to life events from a position of “fuck you” if change comes your way and it is less than optimal for you. This scene from “The Gambler” with Mark Wahlberg I think sums it up best.
Also note, I am speaking just as someone who has been in the private sector for 6+ years now across a few jobs. Nothing specific to me about this post, I just constantly think in my mind what if something were to change in my career or employment right now, am I operating from the correct position of fuck you? Something to consider if you are considering making that big jump to the private sector.
How not to be Cringe on LinkedIn
A running theme on the sitreps page is just how awful and cringe LinkedIn is, and oh boy is it bad. There are dozens of articles on how cringe LinkedIn has become.
I am blown away every single day by the sheer stupidity, narcissism and outright delusion present on LinkedIn. Social media platforms have a tendency to bring out the worst in people, and LinkedIn is no different.
However LinkedIn is a super powerful tool when used correctly. It may surpise you to know this dear reader, but I actually got my current role through LinkedIn (HUGE REVEAL).
So read up, and come discover the secrets of how to use LinkedIn correctly.
